Radon Exposure

What are the health risks of radon exposure? What are the symptoms? The risk of radon exposure may scare you. The risks of radon exposure over time can be a problem – but the good news is that if you have your home tested for radon and (if necessary) have radon removal completed, you decrease your risks greatly. Some of the risks of exposure are:

Lung Cancer: Radon is the #1 cause of lung cancer in the US aside from smoking. It causes 20,000 deaths each year, and is a greater threat to children and smokers than others.

Respiratory Ailments and recurring respiratory ailments such as persistent coughs, breathing problems and respiratory infections.

Headaches

The Surgeon General recommends that every home in the US be tested for radon. Levels can change over time, so it is wise to have this checked periodically. The EPA recommends that any home over 4 pCi/L of radon seek radon mitigation, and recommends that homeowners aim for levels of less than 2 pCi/L.

The symptoms of radon gas inhalation can vary greatly, but where there are high levels of radon gas (poorly ventilated areas such as mines, crawlspaces and basements) you can experience severe radon poisoning, which could include all of the above effects, wheezing, coughing up blood, or other problems. If you are concerned or have been experiencing these problems, see your doctor as soon as possible.
